3 Ways to Make a Patriotic Quilt

Regardless of your political beliefs, I think most of us can agree that if it weren’t for the hundreds of thousands of people who have been willing to serve in the military to protect our homeland, America would not be what it is today. I have such high regard for the amazing service men and women, and I wanted to make some patriotic quilts to express my respect and appreciation.

Over the past few months I’ve had this amazing opportunity to partner with one of my favorite veterans (my mom!) on a project where we can give back to some incredible service men & women. Today I’m going to share with you 3 ways we made Patriotic quilts using the AccuQuilt Go! I hope they spark some inspiration for you!

Salute America Patriotic Quilt

My mom actually is the person that first told me about AccuQuilt and I’m sure glad she did! We worked together to cut out the pieces for our first patriotic quilt together. The quilt we decided to make was inspired by the book GO! Qube Mix & Match Blocks and Quilts by Eleanor Burns. Inside the book there is an amazing patriotic quilt using the 9” Qube and some specialty appliqué dies: the eagle and some stars! Mom & I decided to recreate our own version of this quilt to donate as our way of supporting our amazing service men and women!

90% Faster Than Rotary Cutters

The Salute America pattern in the book calls for 9” Turnstile blocks, but instead we made them 8” since that’s the Qube size I have! Isn’t it neat how easy it is to switch it up?!

To make the quilt like mine, here are all the dies you would need:

Do you know anyone that gives 150% at everything they do? That kind of person is like my momma. She got so inspired working on the pinwheel patriotic quilt that she actually went ahead and made two more quilts to go along with it!

The Patriotic Pineapple Quilt

One of the additional quilts @janejustsew decided to make uses the Pineapple Block-on-board die. She used that die to make 12 mainly white blocks with red accent and 19 mainly red blocks with white accent, creating the stripes reminiscent of the American flag. She then also used the pineapple BOB to make 4 blue and white blocks to place where the stars of the flag are. I really adore the beauty of this flag quilt made with the pineapple block shapes!

Disappearing 9-Patch Quilt

Another amazing quilt made for this special project for veterans is the simple & classic Disappearing 9-Patch. If you want a quick project to bust some scraps, then this is a really great option. To make it, you simply cut 5” squares and sew 9 together into a large square, you then cut that square into 4 equal squares, rotate them, and sew back together!

You can use traditional cutting methods for the disappearing 9-patch quilt but if you want to use AccuQuilt dies, consider the 4.5” finished square die or the 4.5” finished strip die.

Where are these patriotic quilts going?

All 3 of these beautiful Americana themed quilts will be donated to the West Point parent’s club of Central Florida to be sold at their annual silent auction this December. If you want to donate to help support our military men and women, there are quite a few amazing organizations out there. Please consider donating to the West Point Association of Graduates or the Wounded Warrior Project.

Another amazing thing you can do to help support veterans is to consider making a quilt for for Quilts of Valor. Find out more here.
