First Gift Quilt: one great pattern with many possibilities
One quilt pattern, yet so many options!
I want to share with you my experience making the First Gift Quilt.
I recently made this super fun quilt that I couldn’t help but write up a little pattern review. You can purchase this pattern on Lo & Behold’s website HERE.
Brittany from @Loandbeholdstitchery created this pattern based on a quilt her grandmother had given to her when she was a baby. Talk about some beautiful history!
I did both my traditional and modern versions with fabrics by PaintBrush Studio. You can purchase them through Pineapple Fabrics for really good prices! See the photo captions to know exactly which colors I chose. The colors I used for the traditional quilt are: Sky, Haze, Revel, Aluminum, and Abyss, and the colors I used for he modern quilt are: White, Pale Silver, Poseidon, Pale Aqua, and Abyss.
The things I love about this pattern are that it looks way more complex than it is, and can look drastically different based on what you do with it! There are so many possibilities and Brittany really knows how to break down each step for you. She even made the pattern into strip-pieced sections to save SO MUCH TIME. Seriously, the way she streamlines quilt piecing is amazing!
Sewing tip: One neat tool that I really wish I had to speed up all the cutting for strip piecing in general is the Stripology Ruler by Creative Grids or something similar. Seriously, check them out because they’re awesome!
While every pattern I have seen from @loandbeholdstitchery is wonderfully written, I really admired the thought and logic that went into this one. This pattern turns a pretty tricky design into a total breeze that you can finish in a week if you really wanted to.
While I haven’t had time yet to baste or quilt my traditional version of the quilt, I wanted to show you the way I quilted my modern version!
I used size 8 Perle Cotton thread in White and a Big Stitch Quilting needle. The batting I chose is Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 and was a total dream! It’s like a literal cloud and super cozy! The quilting design I chose was to emphasize the pattern of the quilt and I really was surprised by how much I ended up loving the look of it on the back! I’m so glad I did a solid color backing on this quilt because it makes the stitches really pop! You can tell that they’re not all *perfect* but I did some of the quilting on an airplane so I choose to give some grace in that regard and love every imperfection!
