Bennett’s Baby Quilt with the Blessings Quilt Pattern
Let me introduce you to the very first Blessings Quilt I ever made: Bennett’s Blessings Quilt!
The Blessings Quilt pattern was designed for this little guy while I was prepping his nursery! This modern flying geese quilt pattern design lends well to baby quilts, especially for baby boys! This Blessings Quilt Pattern is simple to make using the traditional Flying Geese quilt blocks. So whether you are a beginner quilter or if you’ve been quilting for years, I think you will love making this baby quilt!
As you can see, this Blessings quilt is clearly baby-approved! The 45″ square size makes the perfect play mat for a baby who is learning to push up, roll over, or even just practicing the basics of learning to crawl.
Fabrics on this Modern Baby Quilt
The fabrics used in this quilt top are mostly Riley Blake Basics from my stash. The background is Confetti Cottons Riley White and the orange and green fabrics were all scraps from my stash, since the pattern is so scrap-friendly!
This baby Blessings Quilt showcases one of my favorite fabrics for the backing: It’s a gorgeous citrus fabric from Paintbrush Studio Fabrics.
Use Your Fabric Stash on Your Blessings Quilt
While the Blessings Quilt is technically written for using 1/4 yds or Fat Quarters, you can easily use as many fabrics as you would like! I personally chose to use scraps to add more variety into my quilt.
Of course, first things first, you’ll want to pick out your scraps. You will need scraps that are at least around 8″ square in order to make this baby quilt pattern. I also found it particularly helpful to use my AccuQuilt dies to cut out flying geese, since AccuQuilt makes triangle shapes SO easy, and then I didnt need to trim my blocks after stitching them!
Straight Line Quilting for this Modern Baby Boy Quilt
I chose simple straight lines for the quilting on this baby quilt to really let the modern design of the pattern shine. I used a classic 40 wt cotton thread for this simple quilting.
Sewing Techniques in the Blessings Quilt Pattern
One thing I love about the Blessings Quilt Pattern is how it can teach beginner quilters one of my favorite basic traditional quilt blocks: Flying Geese!
If you’ve never tried the 4-at-a-time Flying Geese method before, this is a great pattern to learn it or perfect your skills! The first time I ever used this technique, it completely blew my mind and now it’s one of my favorite ways to make Flying Geese!
The Blessings Quilt pattern also includes alternate instructions for using a die cut machine such as an AccuQuilt Fabric Cutter. I personally use my AccuQuilt as often as I can and find it cuts down on so much time! Learn more about AccuQuilt here. The Blessings Pattern can be made using shapes in the 12″ Mix and Match Qube, along with a strip cutter die if you choose. (But I personally prefer using Stripology for the strips.)
