Connector Quilt: Fat Quarter Friendly Quilt Pattern

So you want to make a Connector quilt out of fat quarters? I say that’s a GREAT idea! It will definitely look a bit more scrappy but can be really amazing! Scrappy quilts are great!

There are lots of different ways to go about making a quilt pattern without adhering strictly to fabric requirements. I personally prefer to view the “requirements” as more of “suggestions”.

Here are a few examples of how to adjust the fabric requirements to meet your desired level of scrappiness and use up fat quarters, or even just any decent size scraps you might have laying about!

Moderately Scrappy Connector Quilt

This fun scrappy quilt version was made by Alison of @redheaded_rita. She kept with the general color families of the 4 colors but used coordinating fat quarters, fat eighths, and other scraps instead of yardage. I love how it maintains the same look and feel of the pattern but gives it a really fun unique twist!

If you want to make a baby size Connector Quilt like Alison did, grab your scraps and get started! You’ll want to use yardage for Color 1 and then combine like-colored fabric pieces for Color 2, 3 and 4 separately. Alison used solid white for Color 1, 5 different pink fabrics for Color 2, 7 different blue fabrics for Color 3, and 3 different green fabrics for Color 4. Most of them were Fat Quarters, Fat Eighths, or other scraps from her stash.

Super Scrappy Connector Quilt

To make the Connector Quilt pattern extra scrappy looking and Fat Quarter (FQ) friendly, you can easily just separate Color 1 (background) out and combine the remaining 3 colors together, using Fat Quarters or scraps from your stash for all of those, ignoring the color distinctions completely. Here is the minimum number of fat quarters you will need for each size, but keep in mind you can use more for a more diversified & scrappier look:

  • Wall Hanging: 3 FQs
  • Baby: 7 FQs
  • Lap: 10 FQs
  • Throw: 12 FQs
  • Bed: 22 FQs

For the example shown, I just pulled a handful of scraps from my scrap bins and started cutting. Once you pick out the fabrics you will use, you can begin cutting the designated pieces from instructions included in the pattern.
