Make a Modern Mini Quilt using the Paradigm Quilt Pattern
Let’s talk about Mini Quilts, specifically the art of a MODERN MINI QUILT. There are many things I adore about modern mini quilts, but mostly I make them because of their versatility and how they really don’t use much quilting fabric! If you have lots of fabric scraps to use up, mini quilts are always a great option! I actually made this modern quilted wall hanging entirely out of scraps from a previous quilt. Now grab some fabric scrap from your stash and let’s dive in!
Best Modern Quilt Pattern
My personal favorite best modern quilt pattern at the moment is the Paradigm Quilt Pattern. The Paradigm quilt pattern is beginner friendly and very quick to make regardless of which size quilt you choose to make! You can grab your own pattern over in my shop in either a PDF download or a printed paper booklet!

Modern Wall Quilt
This modern quilt wall hanging pattern is a bold, fun & unique quilt pattern design! I love how it can bring a touch of quilting to existing modern home decor. The Paradigm quilt pattern features traditional shapes such as Flying Geese quilt blocks and Economy quilt blocks but arranges them in a more modern layout.
Fabrics Used for this Modern Mini Quilt
As I mentioned earlier, modern mini quilts like the pillow size Paradigm quilt pattern are a great way to use up scraps of fabric from previous quilting projects. And that’s exactly what I did on this modern wall hanging quilt pattern! The fabrics on this wall hanging quilt were all leftovers from this Reverberate Quilt. They are all PBS Fabrics solid quilting cotton, and I’ll link the exact fabrics here for you:
- Oyster
- Red Wood
- Haze
- Bronze
- Revel
- Burnt Sienna (Binding fabric)
- Cracked Ice (Backing fabric)
Straight Line Channel Quilting
Once you finish piecing the patchwork, you can sew this pattern into a pillow, wall hanging or even tote bag! I made this one into a quilted wall hanging as modern home decor.
A great option for how to quilt your own quilts is to do straight line quilting, also known as channel quilting. This modern mini quilt was quilted using straight lines each spaced a half inch apart.
If you plan to quilt your own quilt using straight line quilting, I definitely recommend marking your quilt, using a walking foot, and taking it slow. Check out this article for a great tutorial for machine quilting straight lines!
Favorite Quilting Tools for the Pillow Size Paradigm Quilt
It is totally possible to make this modern mini quilt just using the basic quilting supplies you likely already have on hand. But, extra quilting tools, rulers, and notions can make the process much easier! I personally enjoy having a variety of quilting ruler sizes, but you could definitely get by with just a few. For making the flying geese, I recommend the Wing Clipper Ruler. You can learn more about Flying Geese in this tutorial. It’s also helpful to have a quilting ruler at least 8.5″ square, Best Press, and of course nice sharp blades on your rotary cutter.
Other versions of the Paradigm Quilt Pattern
I’ve made a few different variations of the Paradigm quilt pattern and would love to show them to you! Take a peek at some of these:
