Keystone Quilt Pattern: Scrappy & Modern

The Keystone Quilt Pattern is a brand new, modern, scrappy Quilt Pattern just for you!

Do you want to try a new scrappy quilt pattern? Since I began quilting in 2013, I’ve always valued using traditional geometric shapes with modern designs, styles, and fabrics. I love to have fun with a nod towards tradition, and that just about sums up what the Keystone Quilt Pattern is all about!

This sampler style pattern features Flying Geese blocks, chain units, and Square-in-a-square blocks. Whether you’ve made these blocks before, or you are just learning, I hope you’ll make this fun, modern design!

Find out more about Keystone by watching this video or read more below:

Keystone Quilt Sizes

The Keystone quilt pattern includes three sizes, and is block-based. Here are the dimensions of each size:

  • Baby: 42″ x 42″
  • Throw: 60″ x 78″
  • Bed: 78″ x 96″

Fabric Requirements for Making a Keystone Quilt

The Keystone pattern is unique in that it is great for really letting your favorite fabric scraps shine! I love how it mixes together yardage and scraps for a scrappy quilt that is not too busy. Feel free to make the scrappy squares as scrappy as you would like – the requirement below is just a guide so you can tell how much fabric you will need in total.

Note that if you are making this quilt using AccuQuilt, you will need a little extra background fabric. The exact AccuQuilt fabric requirements are written inside the quilt pattern.

Get Your Fabric Scraps Ready

The Keystone Quilt Pattern is perfect for using your favorite fabric scraps that are at least 2.5″ square! You’ll notice in the fabric requirements that I’ve calculated the scrappy squares in terms of Fat Eighths, however, you can use any scraps that are at least 2.5″ square.

A Charm Pack Quilt Pattern

Do you have a Charm Pack or two laying around? This modern scrappy quilt pattern is actually perfect for using your favorite Charm Pack! One Charm Pack will work for the chain pieces on a Throw Size Quilt, or you will need two Charm Packs to make the Bed Size Quilt. Similarly, Mini Charms are also perfect for this pattern as well!

Use your AccuQuilt to make the Keystone Quilt Pattern

The main portion of all my quilt patterns is written so it can be cut with a rotary cutter & quilting rulers, however I have a special treat in the Keystone Pattern. There are a couple extra pages just for you AccuQuilt-lovers out there! I personally have been using an AccuQuilt for years and try to use it as often as I can.

The Keystone Quilt Pattern is a great opportunity to use AccuQuilt for precise cutting on lots of little pieces!

These articles and videos are a great place to start to learn more about AccuQuilt:

For making my own quilts, I often use a mix of AccuQuilt and my Stripology ruler to cut out my pieces.

Keystone Quilt Tutorials

One special technique taught in the Keystone quilt pattern is the 4-at-a-time No-Waste Flying Geese method (if you’re not using AccuQuilt to cut the pieces). If you want to learn more about it, check out this blog post.

Of course the Keystone pattern itself shows the step-by-step instructions, but sometimes a video is helpful too, like this:

For trimming the Flying Geese, these are some great ruler options that you can consider. My personal favorite is currently the Wing Clipper ruler.

All fabrics in this Keystone Quilt Kit are from Riley Blake Designs. Mostly Confetti Cottons Solids with a few blenders added in for a little extra texture in the scrappy squares.

The quilt kits include enough fabric to cut out using traditional cutting or using an AccuQuilt fabric cutting machine.
